RSS

RSS stands for 'Really Simple Syndication' and is a mechanism by which the content of websites (e.g. screen text, videos, photos etc) can be frequently updated. Critically, because it works using a standard set of rules and formats, an RSS feed can be used to provide the same content to multiple different sites which makes the process of updating sites really easy.

You can tell if a web page is being updated using an RSS feed by whether the orange RSS logo is displayed on your browser screen. Clicking the logo will normally take you to a page which shows the content in its raw form before it has been formatted to be displayed on whichever site it is to appear on.

Many people use RSS feeds to just get the information they are interested in sent direct to their browser using an RSS feed reader.

There are a number of benefits to organisations from making RSS feeds available from their sites, such as giving their users a convenient way of accessing their new site content or by providing content for inclusion in an Email newsletter.
